Folk high schools: the year that changes you
- We often get questions about what a folk high school is. And when we tell them that a year in a folk high school is the same as a year devoted to their own interest, they are a bit surprised, explains the Public Relations counselor.
- Some students are well informed about what a folk high school is, and they know which course of study they want to attend. We can help them finding the right school.
The folk high schools had a lively performance at the education fair in Lillestrøm. In addition to an information stand they had built a stage where students from different schools performed, with the senior students as the audience.
- We have had many visitors today. The stage is probably the best part, we get a lot of visitors there. This year, we have invested a lot of time and money on the education fair, and we hope this will motivate the students to apply to our schools, says Marte Fougner Hjort, Public Relations counselor at the folk high school’s information office.
Hjort points out that the most important work for the representatives is to inform the students what a folk high school really is. A lot of people think that it is the same as a college or a university.
What Is Folk High School?
Folk high schools are one-year boarding schools offering a variety of exciting non-traditional and non-academic subjects, as well as academic subjects. The idea of folk high schools is learning for life, an opportunity to grow both individually, socially, and academically in small learning communities. All students live on campus in close contact with staff and their fellow students. One important part of the folk high school experience is to form a community, in and out of class.
